What’s a Pre‑Shop? The Behind‑the‑Scenes Step That Makes Shopping Feel Effortless

If you’ve ever worked with a personal stylist, you’ve probably experienced the magic of walking into a store and finding pieces that feel perfect for you: the right colours, the right fit, the right vibe, all waiting in a neat curated selection.

The secret most people don’t know is that the magic doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because of something called a pre-shop.

I’m pulling back the curtain on what a pre shop is, why it matters, and how it transforms your styling session from overwhelming to effortless.

What is a pre-shop?

A pre-shop is the strategic, behind the scenes preparation I do before I ever take a client into a store.

In the day or two leading up to your session, I visit multiple stores with a detailed list of what I’m looking for based on your consutlation. Every piece is selected specifically for your needs, lifestyle, body, colours, wardrobe gaps and budget.

Think of it as reconnaissance meets curation. I’m scouting, assessing, selecting and preparing so your actual shopping d is calm, intentional, productive and enjoyable.

What actually happens during a pre shop?

I cover a lot of ground

On a pre shop day, I usually clock 20,000 steps because I’m visiting far more stores than I’ll ultimately take you to. I’m scanning collections, checking stock and hunting for the pieces that truly fit your brief. On a typical client shopping day, I walk around 10,000 steps (you do less! Follow for the post on the shopping session and you’ll see why).

What I’m looking for

I’m assessing fit, colour, fabric, quality, size, stock levels and availability. I’m also considering how each item works with what you already own and whether it fills the gaps we identified in your wardrobe.

Every client’s brief is different, and so is every pre shop.

I assess the store environment

This part is just as important as the clothes.

I’m checking the overall location so we can move easily between stores within the time we have. I’m also factoring in weather and ease of travel.

Inside each store, I’m paying attention to the staff, the comfort level, the lighting, the changeroom access and whether the space feels welcoming or intimidating. I’m asking: Will this feel good for you? Will staff help? Will they give us space?

Your styling day isn’t just about the day we shop together. It’s about introducing you to stores you may not have visited before. I want to know you’ll get the same level of care if you walk in alone as you would with a stylist beside you.

I put aside the best pieces

Once I’ve found items that meet your brief, I set them aside so they’re ready when you arrive. No rummaging, overwhelm or guesswork.

Why clients love the pre shop (even if they don’t know it’s happening)

I hear versions of these comments all the time:

“I’ve never been game enough to go in there.” “I’ve never even noticed this store before.” “I don’t want to talk to staff. I don’t have the headspace.” “Shopping is overwhelming. I don’t know where to start.” “I always end up buying something I don’t even like, or I leave empty handed.”

This is exactly why the pre shop exists.

It removes the stress, the decision fatigue and the emotional labour of shopping. When you arrive, everything’s already been thought through specifically for you. You simply try on, enjoy and choose what feels right, supported by my knowledge of your wardrobe, lifestyle and goals.

The difference between shopping alone and shopping with a stylist

Shopping with a stylist isn’t just about having someone with expertise. It’s about having someone who’s done the groundwork. The planning, the scouting, the selecting, the problem solving, the liaising with staff and the creative thinking that all happen before you even show up.

That’s what creates the VIP experience that feels like magic. You get the ease, the calm, the fun and the confidence. It’s a shopping and styling experience designed especially for you.
